The Floating Subchassis

Before building turntables, Thorens crafted precision clockwork music movements in Sainte-Croix. That legacy defined an obsessive pursuit of mechanical silence, producing the broadcast-grade TD 124 and the suspended subchassis benchmark TD 160.

Acoustic Isolation Engineering

The Three-Spring Isolation Principle

Mechanical vibrations travel through floorboards, plinths, and motor mounts. Thorens solved this by hanging the platter bearing and tonearm board together on three tuned conical coil springs, creating a floating seismic island.

BROADCAST STANDARD 1957 - 1967

Thorens TD 124

Hybrid Belt & Idler Drive

The iron fist in the velvet glove. An oversized shaded-pole induction motor drives a stepped pulley through a short belt, which spins an idler wheel against a massive ten-pound cast iron flywheel platter.

Platter Mass: 4.5 kg Cast Iron
Speed Selection: 16, 33, 45, 78 RPM
Clutch Mechanism: Aluminum Top Platter Lift
Main Bearing: 14mm Hardened Steel Ball

SUSPENSION GENESIS 1965 - 1972

Thorens TD 150

Three-Point Floating Belt

The radical prototype that defined modern high fidelity. Introduced the suspended three-point subchassis to European homes, proving that mechanical isolation produces an infinitely deeper soundstage.

Platter Mass: 3.4 kg Zinc Alloy Two-Piece
Speed Selection: 33 & 45 RPM
Motor Topology: 16-Pole AC Synchronous
Suspension Style: 3 Conical Coil Springs

THE BENCHMARK 1972 - 1988

Thorens TD 160

Precision Suspended Belt

The perfection of suspended subchassis design. Features heavy pressed steel inner chassis, captive bearing well, machined dynamically balanced zinc alloy platter, and silent drive isolation.

Platter Mass: 3.2 kg Dynamically Balanced
Bearing Diameter: 10mm Sintered Bronze Well
Rumble Rating: -75 dB DIN B Specification
Wow & Flutter: 0.05% WRMS Tolerance

Workshop Calibration Protocols

The Thorens Restoration Bench

Vintage Thorens decks endure for decades when aligned correctly. Four mechanical checkpoints preserve original factory specifications.

STEP 01

Vertical Bounce Calibration

Rotate the three conical suspension spring nuts until the platter sits level with the plinth. Tapping between spindle and arm base must trigger pure vertical oscillation without lateral wobble.

Oscillation Target: 15 to 20 Pure Vertical Cycles
STEP 02

Sintered Bearing Lubrication

Drain old dried gum from the bronze well using pure isopropyl. Refill with non-detergent ISO VG 46 or 68 turbine oil. Allow the ten-millimeter spindle to seat under its own weight without forcing.

Oil Viscosity: Non-Detergent Turbine ISO 46/68
STEP 03

Drive Belt Dimension Tolerances

Modern generic belts place excessive lateral strain on motor bearings, pulling the suspension off axis. Use exact 260mm to 270mm effective length belts with precision ground matte thickness.

Length Target: Folded 260mm - 270mm Clean Matte
STEP 04

Motor Phase Capacitor Replacement

Aging phase-shift capacitors create motor vibration that vibrates straight through the belt. Replacing the original capacitor restores smooth multi-pole torque rotation with silent idling.

Capacitor Spec: 0.33uF X2 Safety Rated Polypropylene

Thorens TD 160 in The Listening Room

Theoretical isolation means little without groove tracking stress. In the Waxlorian listening room, a restored 1974 Thorens TD 160 faced high-velocity drum transients, room reverb decay, and sub-bass control tests.
