The Clockwork Torque

Where Swiss designers pursued suspended silence, Dual chased mechanical drive. Originating in Black Forest clockwork tradition, these German machines coupled continuous-pole induction motors to heavy cast platters through high-friction idler wheels, delivering explosive rhythmic propulsion.

German Mechanical Discipline

Clockwork Cam & Rim-Drive Geometry

The Dual idler mechanism unites massive rotational inertia with low-friction tonearm tracking. A stepped brass pulley feeds motor torque directly into the inner platter rim, while an under-chassis grooved cam synchronizes automatic cycling.

Workshop Calibration Protocols

The Dual Restoration Bench

Black Forest clockwork mechanisms are built like mechanical watches. Addressing these four common service points restores factory operation for another forty years.

PROTOCOL 01

Steuerpimpel Clutch Pad Renewal

The vinyl clutch sleeve underneath the main tonearm segment disintegrates over decades. Replacing this tiny friction pad restores full automatic tonearm cueing, lead-in, and auto-return cycling without sticking.

Friction Target: Precision Grip without Slippage
PROTOCOL 02

Main Cycle Cam Degreasing

Original factory grease hardens into yellowed glue inside the cam wheel tracks. Flush clean with isopropyl alcohol and re-lubricate with modern lithium-based Shell Alvania grease for effortless mechanical movement.

Recommended Grease: Shell Alvania RL2 / Gadus S2
PROTOCOL 03

Idler Tire Perimeter Dressing

A hardened or glazed idler tire causes subtle speed slip and audible rumble. Mount the idler wheel in a low-speed chuck and gently dress the outer edge with 600-grit sandpaper to expose supple virgin rubber.

Surface Condition: Supple Matte Rubber Contact
PROTOCOL 04

Induction Motor Bushing Satiation

The continuous-pole motor uses upper and lower sintered bronze spherical bushings. Disassemble the motor clamshell and submerge the bushings in warm turbine oil under vacuum to refill the microscopic bronze pores.

Lubricant Specification: Non-Detergent ISO VG 46 Oil

Dual 1019 in The Listening Room

Heavy rim-drive torque produces distinct sonic results in the listening room. Under bench testing with the Shure M75ED Type 2 cartridge, the compact Dual 1019 revealed startling low-frequency punch and rhythmic bite that belt-drive decks absorb.
