Low-Mass Rigidity & Beam Dynamics

In 1973 Roy Gandy founded Rega Research in Southend-on-Sea to challenge heavy turntable orthodoxies. Heavy plinths absorb vibration slowly and store residual energy. Stored energy bleeds back into the stylus, clouding musical timing.

Rega designs prioritize minimal mass and maximum structural rigidity. Connecting the platter bearing directly to the tonearm assembly with a stiff beam prevents energy absorption. Music emerges with crystalline transient speed and pristine pitch accuracy.

The Southend Rigid Beam & Double Brace Geometry

Roy Gandy rejects heavy chassis designs because mass absorbs kinetic energy and dissipates it slowly. The critical link joins the main bearing housing directly to the tonearm base via a rigid phenolic resin Double Brace. A low-mass stressed-skin plinth eliminates acoustic storage, while an Optiwhite float glass platter focuses flywheel inertia at the outer perimeter.

The upper and lower brace forms a structural beam between the brass central bearing well and the RB tonearm collar. This prevents microscopic chassis flex where mechanical stiffness matters most, avoiding heavy acoustic damping.

Float Glass Flywheel Platter

High-density 12mm float glass concentrates rotational inertia at the rim without adding mass to the plinth center. The flywheel effect maintains pitch accuracy while remaining acoustically transparent.

Single-Piece Cast RB Tonearm

The RB330 arm tube is cast as one continuous piece of aluminum, eliminating headshell joint resonance. Hand-selected zero-play micro-bearings preserve delicate musical dynamics.

Forensic Rega Calibration & Maintenance

Rega decks require precise mechanical setup to preserve low-mass energy dissipation. Four bench protocols restore vintage and modern Southend decks to factory tolerance.

01

Brass Bearing Well Decontamination & Hypoid Oil Calibration

Remove sub-platter slowly to prevent airlock suction. Extract old lubricant using a clean syringe. Clean the brass well with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Inspect the 4.76mm chrome steel bearing ball for microscopic flat spotting. Refill with two drops of SAE 80W/90 hypoid gear oil before reseating the spindle.

Benchmark • Spindle must spin freely for over 60 seconds with silent hydrodynamic damping.
02

24V Low-Noise Motor Suspension & Anti-Vibration PCB Tuning

Inspect resilient adhesive motor mounting pads on vintage O-ring suspended motors. For rigid 24V upgrade kits, verify stainless mounting screws remain firm. Connect an oscilloscope to check the phase shift capacitor on the motor PCB, nulling electrical vibration before it enters the plinth.

Benchmark • Zero motor vibration felt through the plinth top surface during 33.33 RPM operation.
03

Precision EBLT Drive Belt Alignment & Pulley Dressing

Clean the aluminum motor drive pulley and sub-platter rim with isopropyl alcohol to remove rubber residue. Fit a genuine Rega EBLT monolithic drive belt. Observe belt travel with the platter running to confirm the belt tracks dead center along the pulley crown.

Benchmark • Seamless round belt profile eliminates micro-slippage and reduces wow and flutter below 0.04%.
04

RB Tonearm Bearing Friction & Magnetic Anti-Skate Calibration

Test vertical and horizontal arm bearings using the paper stamp drop test. The tonearm must swing smoothly with zero play or notched resistance. Calibrate tracking force using a digital gauge. Adjust the non-contact magnetic slider anti-skate mechanism to match the cartridge stylus profile.

Benchmark • Arm passes the zero-drag deflection test and centers in the groove without inner groove distortion.
